Chief Telecommunications Officer, Mr. Reginald Bourne discusses the ITU

report  with ITU Programme Officer for the Caribbean, Mr.    Sylvester Caddette.

Barbados Retains Its Lead in ICTs in the Caribbean Region.

Barbados is third in the Americas, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), when the ITU released its annual  Measuring the Information Society Report at UN House on 1 December 2015.

Chief Telecommunications Officer, Mr. Reginald Bourne, was pleased with the progress Barbados had made as it had retained its positioned just behind United States and Canada in the Report.

Mr. Bourne insisted that Barbados, under his watch, would not rest on its laurels but would strive to improve its position from 29th in the World Report.

Barbados had moved from 36th in the previous year's report to its current position of 29th in this year's ITU Report.

TUE, OCTOBER 08, 2013 - 12:06 AM
Barbados is leading the rest of the region when it comes to information and communications technology (ICT) development for the period 2012 to 2013.
The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) released the latest figures which showed Barbados ranked at No. 3 in the Americas and 29th globally out of 157 countries assessed for the period. Barbados was ranked 36th globally for the period 2011 to 2012.
In the Americas region, the United States is ranked No.1, Canada No. 2, Antigua and Barbuda No. 5, St Vincent and the Grenadines No. 10 and Trinidad and Tobago No. 11, rounding off the top six countries in that region.
Sharing in the presentation of the 2013 Measuring the Information Society findings yesterday at United Nations House, Sylvester Cadette, ITU programme officer for the Caribbean, said the ranking was “significant” for the region at this time as it made progress in its overall development. (MM)

2012 ICT STATISTICS FOR BARBADOS
Barbados increased its IDI by 0.65 value points, rising seven places to 29th position in the IDI 2012. Most progress has been made in the use sub-index. The country’s two mobile operators, Digicel and Lime, launched their mobile-broadband networks in November 2011. Mobile broadband had been long awaited in Barbados, one of the last countries in the Americas region to offer the service. Subsequently, wireless-broadband penetration went up from less than 1 per cent in 2011 to 37 per cent in 2012.

Lime and Digicel offer a variety of data plans allowing users to choose according to their needs and budget. Customers can choose between prepaid and post-paid offers for both handset- and computer-based usage, as well as different validity periods and data allowances.27 The IDI access sub-index highlights improvements as well. By end 2012, the proportion of households with a computer and with Internet access both increased by around 6 per cent to 69 per cent and 58 per cent, respectively.

Furthermore, international Internet bandwidth per Internet user almost doubled, from around 38 000 bit/s in 2011 to close to 70 000 bit/s in 2012.
